Welcome to My Practice – A New Space for Collaboration and Care

Hello and welcome!

I’m Dr Ali Eqbal, a Melbourne-based gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist, and I’m delighted to introduce my new webpage – a place designed to connect patients, GPs, and specialist colleagues who share a commitment to high-quality, evidence-based gastrointestinal care.

A Focus on Precision and Early Diagnosis

Much of my work centres on diagnostic endoscopy – performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy with meticulous attention to detail to detect early disease and guide tailored management plans.

I believe that early, accurate diagnosis is the foundation of good outcomes. Using advanced imaging and magnification techniques, my goal is to ensure every patient receives the most precise assessment possible – from subtle inflammatory changes to early neoplasia.

Special Interest in Complex Polyp and Early Cancer Resection

I have a special interest in the management of large or complex colorectal polyps and early colorectal cancers, often referred from other centres.

These lesions can be challenging, but with advanced endoscopic resection techniques such as EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection) and ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) many can be removed safely and effectively without surgery.

Collaboration and Referrals

I work in a public capacity at Peninsula University Hospital where I am a part of the Complex Polyp Team and the IBD team. Privately I work across Westpoint Day Hospital in Melbourne’s west as well as The Centre for GI Health in the south-east of Melbourne, providing timely access for both diagnostic procedures and complex resections.

For GPs, my aim is to make communication straightforward and responsive — providing clear reports, practical follow-up recommendations, and same-week advice when needed.

For specialist colleagues, including surgeons and gastroenterologists, I’m always happy to review complex cases, provide second opinions, or assist with endoscopic resection when appropriate.

Training, Research and Education

My practice is grounded in evidence and continuous learning.

I completed a three-year fellowship program that included IBD training at the Austin Hospital and advanced endoscopy training with the SPECC team at King’s College Hospital, London — one of the world’s leading centres for endoscopic resection and early bowel cancer management.

I remain actively involved in research and teaching, contributing to data-driven improvements in safety, outcomes, and training in advanced endoscopy. I also regularly share educational updates for GPs and clinicians on new techniques, screening evidence, and practical aspects of gastrointestinal care.

A Collaborative Future

Whether you are a patient seeking expert endoscopic care, a GP looking for a reliable specialist referral pathway, or a colleague managing complex cases, my practice is built around collaboration and accessibility.

I invite you to explore the site to learn more about the services available and how we can work together to deliver the best outcomes for our patients.

Warm regards,

Dr Ali Eqbal
